2013 FRA State Singles Championships
By Gary Wargo
February 10, 2013 - Sarasota, FL
The 2013 Florida State Singles Championships took place at the Sarasota Bath & Racquet Club February 8-10, 2013. There were 94 participants competing in 25 different skill and age singles divisions. Neither of the 2012 Men’s or Women’s Open Champions were able to repeat in 2013.
The Men’s Open division had 12 competitors from around the state in the draw. The Open final had the top seed Mike Harmon
of Sarasota defeating the 6 seed Wes Miller
of Bradenton (15-6 , 15-10) and therefore regaining his championship title back from Allan Engel
who won the championship in 2012 over Harmon, but was unable to defend this year.
Wes Miller, at age 37 is the #62 ranked player in the USA and the #7 ranked player in Florida. Miller got past Roberto Cantos
(WBF-NS) in the round-of-16’s. Then Wes went to a tie-breaker with 35 year old Andres Ramirez
of Casselberry (15-4 , 13-15 , 11-7) in the quarter-finals. Miller then defeated Vinny Carvallo, age 23, of Pompano Beach (15-2 , 15-12) in the semis, just to get his shot at Mike Harmon in the final.
Mike Harmon, at age 31 is the #39 ranked player in the country, the #2 ranked player in Florida (only behind Shane Vanderson), and the 2009 Men’s Open National Champion. Harmon got a bye in the round-of-16’s, but then had to defeat 30 year old Joe Linnell
of Greenacres (15-8 , 15-7) in the quarters. Mike then needed the come-back tie-breaker win against 34 year old Jonathan Burns
of Boca Raton (13-15 , 15-11 , 11-3) in the semi-finals, just to get into the final. Joanathan Burns took the 3rd place bronze medal. Congratulations to Mike Harmon as the 2013 Florida Men’s Open Champion.
The Women’s Open division included 7 strong Florida competitors in the draw. The Open final had the 3 seed teenage phenom Jordan Cooperrider
of Palm Harbor defeating the 1 seed and 2012 reigning champion Sara Noyes
of Saint Petersburg in two straight games (15-10, 15-10).
Sara Noyes is the #126 ranked female player in the country and the #5 ranked woman in Florida. Noyes got the only bye in the quarter-finals, then went on to defeat Susan Adams
of Saint Petersburg (15-4 , 15-5) in the semi-finals, just to get that opportunity to attempt to defend her 2012 championship.
Jordan Cooperrider is an outstanding fourteen year old ranked #267 nationally and #17 in Florida, though she already has 6 national and 2 world junior championships on her resume. Jordan had to defeat the 6 seed and #6 ranked woman in Florida, Claudia Andrade
of Miami in a tie-breaker (15-14 , 13-15 , 11-8) in the quarter-finals. Next Jordan had to outlast the 2 seed and #2 ranked female player in Florida, racquetball hall of famer Susan Pfahler
of Neptune Beach in a tie-breaker (15-12 , 10-15 , 11-5) just to make it to the final. Susan Pfahler received the 3rd place bronze medal.
This year’s women’s results confirms the parity in Florida women’s racquetball. This result is the fifth different women’s champion in the last five years, Jordan Cooperrider in 2013, Sara Noyes in 2012, Janet Tyler
in 2011, Helen Marseco
in 2010, and Kristen Alatorre-Martin
in 2009. Congratulations to Jordan Cooperrider as the 2013 Florida Women’s Open Champion.
The 2012-2013 Florida season Men’s and Women’s Open Singles Championship Cup was announced at this year’s State Singles as well. The winner of the Florida Cup is determined by the player earning the most Open points throughout the season. The 2012-2013 Men’s Open Singles Champion Cup was earned by Mike Harmon. Mike’s name has now been inscribed on the Cup for 5 straight seasons, and has only been won by one other player, Fernando Rios
in the 2007-2008 season.
The 2012-2013 Women’s Open Singles Champion Cup was earned by Sara Noyes. This is Sara’s first seasonal Cup win. The 4 prior seasons has Janet Tyler’s name on the Cup. The only other Women’s Cup winners have been Laura Brandt and Susan Pfahler who co-championed the Cup in the 2007-2008 season.

UCF Central Florida Showdown Tournament
February 22 – 24, 2013
Article and photography by Shawn Lopez and Travis Burnell.
The UCF Showdown was held this February at the University of Central Florida, and what a turn out it was! Play was kicked off on Friday with the collegiate divisions comprised of college students from all over Florida. UCF secured 1st place in Men's and Women's #1's and Men's #2's, #6's, and Double's number #3's. Also taking home medals in 3 other divisions allowed UCF to rocket into 1st place for the all around team award and secured it on Saturday. Some amazing racquetball was played on Saturday and Sunday as well.
Its no surprise national mixed doubles champions James Russell
and Kelly Van Zant
– Russell played great ball to take home the gold in mixed open. While Alejandro Herrera
dominated in the Men's open singles. Playing doubles in Men's C's was UCF's own Joey Boyette
and father David Boyette
who fought through fatigue to take the gold. Travis Burnell
squeaked out a tight win over rival Spencer Smudd
to take the A division. The match of the tournament though goes to the Open doubles finals match of Herrera/Rebeor
vs Russell/Hand. This match went deep into a tiebreaker with no team giving an inch. Herrera/Rebeor
were finally able to close it out taking gold in Men's Open Doubles. UCF would like to thank the racquetball community for all their support and kind words. And hopefully everyone is looking to come back next year for the 2nd Annual UCF Showdown!

UCF Knights Racquetball Club Activitiesby Gary Wargo
May 1, 2013 - Orlando, FL
The UCF Racquetball club has wrapped up its program for the 2012-2013 school year. It has been an awesome year for the club. All of our major goals were met and we expanded our fundraising by 400% from last year. In addition we were able to use these funds to travel to a bunch of awesome tournaments around the state and of course intercollegiate nationals in Arizona.
As our second year as a club at UCF, we hosted our second annual spring tournament, the 2013 Central Florida Showdown, and raised enough money to take 7 players to nationals. As a result, our club ranked 18th out of Division 1 Colleges and will continue its ascent to the top at next years nationals, wherever that may be.
Thanks to everyone who volunteered to house people, helped with our fundraising events, played in our spring tournament, or helped with our club efforts. A huge thanks goes out to you for supporting our club and making our events possible. Another big thanks to all the retiring officers who put in a substantial amount of their time to do all the planning and work it takes to keep a club running and successful.
Shawn Lopez
will be retiring after two years as President. Danielle Harris will be retiring after two years as Treasurer. John Skinner
will be retiring after a semester as Vice President. In addition, officer elections have been conducted and we are welcoming our new officers, Armany Gonzalez
as President, Aaron Owji
as Vice President, and Alex DeCaro
as Treasurer. We know they will not only continue to lead the club throughout the next school year but also continue to grow the sport of racquetball at the University of Central Florida.

2013 FRA Women’s Racquetball Day
By Jean Trimble and Renee Fish
April 27, 2013 - Tampa, FL
The Bob Sierra YMCA in Tampa played host to the 2013 Women’s Day Clinic held April 27th. The Florida Racquetball Association along with The Bob Sierra YMCA and Beef O’Brady’s helped sponsor the event in an effort to promote women’s racquetball.
This year’s event proved once again to be very successful. Twenty women from around the state came together for a day of tips, camaraderie among friends, on court playing, and the chance to meet new players and make new friends. The ladies were given playing tips and fitness tips. The six volunteers who donated their time on Saturday for the event were: Janet Tyler, Jean Trimble, Melody Butler, Renee Fish, Susan Pfahler, and Mary Lyons. After morning sessions on basic shots and court drills, participants played each other or the volunteers in the afternoon and also had the opportunity to receive video analysis of their game by Mary Lyons.
The day began at 9:00 AM and lasted until 5:00 PM. After lunch all the ladies participated in a drawing and were rewarded with really nice prizes provided by our wonderful sponsors for this event. Thank you Wilson, Ektelon, and Florida Racquetball Association. Also thanks to Yvonne Buffington and The Bob Sierra YMCA in Tampa who hosted the event and made it possible to run the clinic.

2013 Team Ocala Scholarship TournamentBy Rod Van Dyke
May 24, 2013 - Ocala, FL
For the past 6 years, Team Ocala's racquetball league has hosted a local racquetball tournament with all proceeds going to youth development in Marion County. Generous sponsors have donated time and money to make the event a top notch experience. In total, Team Ocala has donated almost $30,000. That's amazing for a 2 court facility.
The relationship with the YMCA and the racquetball program is successful. The Y now considers racquetball as a permanent program and the staff is engaged in what is happening back at the courts. This keeps the influx of new members coming into the program. Each season and each tournament, there are always new faces falling back in love with a great sport.

There were 37 players that competed in singles and doubles at the 6th Annual Youth Scholarship Racquetball Tournament. Guests came from as far away as Sebring and Winter Haven to support the tournament.

A big haul for Jacksonville racquetball
By Hana Ostapchuk, Jacksonville.com - Link to original articlePosted Jun 9, 2013 at 7:45 PM
Being inducted into U.S. Amateur Racquetball Hall of Fame is quite accomplishment, but having two fellow Jacksonville players win national championships during your induction weekend is even better.
That was the case last month when Mitt Layton was honored at the 2013 Ektelon National Singles Racquetball Championships, held May 15-19 at the Meridian Sports Club in Fullerton, Calif.
Layton’s credentials included 19 national event titles between 1995 and 2004. Six of the titles were achieved in the National Singles Championships and 13 from the U.S. Open.
All total, Layton won more than 60 titles, including numerous Florida State and Southeastern Regional crowns. He also received five Player of the Year awards during his playing career.
“My only goal in racquetball was to win my first national championship,” Layton said. “Once I got over the hump of winning my first one, it just exploded.”
Len Knudsen saw Layton’s outstanding performance for more than a decade as an opportunity for public recognition, and decided to nominate Layton for the award.
“We talked about it a couple years ago, but I always wondered why he wasn’t already in the hall of fame,” Knudsen said. “I researched it and found out that somebody has to nominate you, so I did that. After what he’s done in 10 years, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be recognized.”
With Knudsen’s help, Layton did bring home a Hall of Fame plaque.
Aaron Metcalf and Knudsen, meanwhile, brought back national championships to the First Coast.
Metcalf, the No.1 seed in the Men’s 40 Open division, won with an 11-9 tiebreaker in the finals against Keith Minor of Illinois.
But as a No. 5 seed in the Men’s 55 Open division, Knudsen’s success wasn’t as easily predicted. First he defeated Florida rival Leonard Mervin in the semifinals, winning 11-6 in the tiebreaker. The two have played each other in state tournaments for 15 years, with Mervin winning every time.
Knudsen then needed an 11-8 win in the tiebreaker to beat Glenn Ball of Texas for the championship.
“By the time we made it to Len’s championship, we were blue in the face from holding our breath for so long,” Layton said. “But the cool thing was all of us from Jacksonville coming home with a win. The trip couldn’t have been scripted any better.”
Of the five Floridians inducted into the USAR Hall of Fame, three are from Jacksonville. In 2006, Susan Morgan Pfahler and Mary Lyons were inducted as a double team - an honor they still hold.
There could be more inductees from Jacksonville in the future, though.
“One of the things that really sets racquetball apart is that it’s a lifetime sport,” Metcalf said. “With 12 courts built here last year and four more in the process, it shows how much it’s growing, especially in Jacksonville.”
