Like father, like son: Palm Beach Central High student a racquetball court starNovember 29, 2018
Timmy Hansen has aspirations of becoming an orthopedic doctor when he gets older. For the time being, he will settle on dissecting his opponents on the racquetball courts.
The 15-year-old Wellington teen recently returned home from XXX IRF World Junior Racquetball Championships in San Luis Potosí, Mexico with a gold medal in doubles after teaming with Iowa’s Andrew Gleason.
The pair, who have been playing together since they met at age 10, rallied from a first set loss of 15-5 to defeat Bolivia’s Mateo Claros and Luis Antonio Aguilar, 15-3 and 11-9, in the tiebreaker. Hansen also picked up a bronze medal in singles.
“Worlds was cool because it was in a different country, so nothing looked the same as it does here,” said Hansen, who also represented the United States in Junior Worlds in 2014 in Colombia. “I like that is different people than I usually play. It was just fun…high energy.”
Hansen, whose shot has been clocked at 130 miles per hour, said he was more prepared this time around.
“Everything changed during that span,” said the Palm Beach Central High School sophomore. “I am more mature and confident.”
“The first year at Worlds, he was nervous and let little things bother him,” said his father Tim Hansen, who was inducted into the United States Racquetball Association Hall of Fame last year as one of the most decorated amateur age group athletes in the history of USA Racquetball. He’s accumulated more than 50 national championships and two world titles.
The elder Hansen, 58, marvels at his son’s skill set.
“I don’t have as much fire as I did when I was younger, but now with Timmy playing, it is fun watching him get a little fire, competing and watching him accelerate really a lot better than I did when I was young,” he said. “I never had his talent when I was his age. The skill level he has now, I probably didn’t have his skill level until I was in my late 20s.”
Sarah Hansen said her son always is around the sport, whether it is bouncing a ball in the mall when they are shopping to training and playing four nights a week at LA Fitness in Wellington.
“From the time he was born, he always had a ball and racquet in his hand,” she said. “He studied it for the first nine years, I always say, and then he went on and started improving his skills.”
Timmy Hansen started playing at age 9 after accompanying his father to tournaments. He is now the top-ranked player in the 14 and Under Division and just aged up. He won the Junior Nationals in June in Iowa in both the singles and doubles, which qualified him for the U.S. team. His doubles victory with Gleason helped erase the sting of losing at the US Open less than a month earlier.
“At the US Open, there were more adults and at the Junior Worlds, it was more kids,” Timmy Hansen said. “The adults to me were better, but there are still kids that are really good.
“I still have to work to do,” he said. “I have to work on everything – my shot selection, my serve, my whole game overall.”
His improvement has been noticeable. He was voted the Most Improved Male Racquetball Player of the Year for 2017-18 by the Florida Racquetball Association. He also earned both the Men’s Skilled and Men’s Junior Player of the Year Awards for the same year. To date, he has won 15 national championships, and five runner-up finishes. He’s also captured eight state championships, all in men’s divisions.
“Being out on the court is fun,” he said. “I like it. It’s cool. I love having fun, running around the court…diving. When I go on the court, I just feel like I am better than them. I am more confident than when I walked in. I want to go as far as I can. I want to be the best.”
One can see where he gets the drive from. Tim Hansen, who has played for more than 40 years, said he still enjoys competing. He earned a racquetball scholarship to Memphis State when he was younger and opted not to try the professional ranks.
“I love the competition of the game,” he said. “I love the people of the game. I have won almost every national or world title there has been.
“I love being out on the court,” he said. “If they shut down racquetball tournaments, I probably wouldn’t play. I like the game, but I don’t enjoy it as much. I play it to compete. The thrill of playing other people and winning, I love it. Even when I lose in tournaments, it’s not a great feeling, but I try harder the next time.”
Both father and son are trained by coach Jeff Leon, one of the best in the world.
Tim Hansen said his son has room for growth.
“His biggest issue now is that he has to analyze his players and get a game plan for every single player he plays,” he said. “He has to learn to adapt to every single player because there are so many different players.
“A great player and a great champion can dissect a player in five points,” he said. “He just can’t walk through players like he used to. He has great shots and now he is getting to a certain point where everybody is good and the way you are going to beat your opponent is using your brain and having a game plan and dissecting them. He plays a lot of adults in tournaments and they don’t like losing to a kid.”
“It feels cool that I can beat adults,” Timmy Hansen said, “and not just kids.”
