2014 FRA Women's Racquetball Day
By Gary Wargo
April 26, 2014 - Tampa, FL

Tampa's Bob Sierra YMCA played host to the 2014 Women’s Racquetball Day clinic held Saturday April 26. The Florida Racquetball Association along with Bob Sierra YMCA and Beef O’Brady’s helped sponsor the event in an effort to promote women’s racquetball.

This year’s event proved once again to be very successful. There were 21 women participating from around the state that came together for a day of instruction, camaraderie among friends, on-court playing, and the chance to meet new players and make new friends. The ladies were given instruction and fitness tips.

The 7 volunteer instructors for the event were; Melody Butler, Renée Fish, Mary Lyons, Sara Noyes, Susan Pfahler, Jean Trimble, and Janet Tyler. After morning sessions on basic shots and court drills, participants played each other or the instructors in the afternoon and also had the opportunity to receive personal video analysis from Mary Lyons.

The day began at 9:00 AM and lasted until 5:00 PM. After lunch all the ladies participated in a drawing and were rewarded with really nice prizes provided by our wonderful sponsors for this event. Thank you Ektelon, Wilson, and Florida Racquetball Association, Inc. Also thanks to Yvonne Buffington and the Bob Sierra YMCA in Tampa which hosted the event and made it possible to run the clinic.

The FRA plans to sponsor the event again next year. Dates and locations will be posted on the FRA website, Florida-Racquetball.org.

Florida's Own, Joe Young Competes Live on ESPN3.com
By Gary Wargo
September 7, 2014 - Las Vegas, NV

Not since the 1970's have the top handball and racquetball players battled for the honor of their sport at a major event with both sports competing. The 3WallBall World Championships at the Las Vegas Stratosphere Hotel & Casino (September 11-14, 2014) with racquetball, handball, and paddleball, and both 3-wall and 1-wall formats are making that happen.

Florida's own Joe Young is to compete in this old school "Handball versus Racquetball" competition, live on ESPN 3.com and live on the Watch ESPN App on Saturday September 13 at 9:00 PM EDT.

This exhibition is reminiscent of the famous filmed competition from 1972. Handball's Paul Haber versus racquetball's Dr. Bud Muehleisen held at Memphis State University. Handball's Haber eventually won the exhibition match in a third game tie-breaker. That film toured the country all throughout the 1970's, like it did at the Clearwater YMCA, the main Florida State Championships facility during that era.
This time (42 years later) it will be streaming live from Vegas and it will be a competition of Outdoor 1-Wall Doubles at the 3WallBall Championships. Top Handballers from New York, Tywan Cook and Timbo Gonzalez versus Racquetball's Outdoor Hall of Famer Robert Sostre from New York and Florida's Joe Young.

U.S. Open: Men's XX+ Final - Mike Harmon vs. John Goth
"It was the Greatest Moment of my Racquetball Life"
By Gary Wargo
October 28, 2014 - Miami, FL

It was June 21, 2014, the final day of the 8-day world championship international event. Florida's Alejandro Herrera became a World Champion in Men's Doubles at the biannual 2014 IRF 17th World Racquetball Championships in Burlington, Canada.

Alejandro had the opportunity to play for his heritage country. He was on Team Colombia, along with fellow Floridian, Claudia Andrade. His doubles partner was Sebastian Franco.

Alejandro and Team Colombia earned a bye in the Round of 32, and in the Round of 16 they took on Costa Rica and defeated Joaquin Solera and Pablo Sauma Masis, 10-15, 15-9, 11-6.

Next, it was Mexico in the Quarter-Finals. Alejandro and partner Sebastian had to face down Alvaro Beltran and Edson Martinez. Team Colombia prevailed in the tie-breaker, winning 15-14, 6-15, 11-9.

In the Semi-Finals, Alejandro and Team Colombia stepped it up and defeated Conrado Moscoso and Mario Mercado of Bolivia in two straight, 15-11, 15-2.

All that was left were the home country favorites, Canada's Mike Green and Vincent Gagnon in the Finals. Canada had just defeated Ben Croft and Tom Fuhrmann of Team USA in the Semi's, so it would be the first Men's Doubles World Championship Final ever (since it all began in 1981) to not have USA or Mexico in the Finals.

The first game of the Finals was close early and the lead went back and forth, but Colombia scored nine unanswered points to win game one, 15-11.

Alejandro and Sebastian continued that strategy of double lob serving to the Canadians in game two, but Canada continued to fight hard. Canada's Mike Green and Vincent Gagnon held Colombia at 12 for a hand-out and a side-out, but they just couldn't score their next time in the box.

For Canada, Gagnon was playing in his first World Championship Final, while it was the second for Green, who lost the Men's Doubles Final four years earlier in South Korea to Team USA's Ben Croft and Mitch Williams.

Then, as Team Colombia was serving at 14-5 in game two, it was all summed up in Alejandro's quote: "It was the greatest moment in my racquetball life."

Boca Raton, FL -The synergy between the Florida indoor and outdoor racquetball communities continues to grow! At the 2014 WOR Florida Outdoor Championships, Sebastian Franco and Yelandi Rivero teamed-up in the Men’s Pro Doubles and were unstoppable. Yelandi is a savvy and experienced outdoor player and his style meshed perfectly with Sebastian’s indoor skills, dominating the field together.

In the Men’s Pro Singles the stage was set for an epic finals showdown between Sebastian Franco and Florida’s perennial indoor champion Mike Harmon, but unfortunately that match was not played due to rain and the results had to be left at a draw providing us co-outdoor singles champions for 2014. Mike has recently become a regular at the outdoor scene in Florida and also made the Pro Doubles finals with partner Jonathan Burns.

All in all it was a great weekend of outdoor racquetball in Florida. Hats off to Tournament Director Joe Young. Thanks also to Vic Leibofsky for providing the tournament summary.

2013 FRA State Singles Championships
By Gary Wargo
February 10, 2013 - Sarasota, FL

The 2013 Florida State Singles Championships took place at the Sarasota Bath & Racquet Club February 8-10, 2013. There were 94 participants competing in 25 different skill and age singles divisions. Neither of the 2012 Men’s or Women’s Open Champions were able to repeat in 2013.

The Men’s Open division had 12 competitors from around the state in the draw. The Open final had the top seed Mike Harmon of Sarasota defeating the 6 seed Wes Miller of Bradenton (15-6 , 15-10) and therefore regaining his championship title back from Allan Engel who won the championship in 2012 over Harmon, but was unable to defend this year.

Wes Miller, at age 37 is the #62 ranked player in the USA and the #7 ranked player in Florida. Miller got past Roberto Cantos (WBF-NS) in the round-of-16’s. Then Wes went to a tie-breaker with 35 year old Andres Ramirez of Casselberry (15-4 , 13-15 , 11-7) in the quarter-finals. Miller then defeated Vinny Carvallo, age 23, of Pompano Beach (15-2 , 15-12) in the semis, just to get his shot at Mike Harmon in the final.

Mike Harmon, at age 31 is the #39 ranked player in the country, the #2 ranked player in Florida (only behind Shane Vanderson), and the 2009 Men’s Open National Champion. Harmon got a bye in the round-of-16’s, but then had to defeat 30 year old Joe Linnell of Greenacres (15-8 , 15-7) in the quarters. Mike then needed the come-back tie-breaker win against 34 year old Jonathan Burns of Boca Raton (13-15 , 15-11 , 11-3) in the semi-finals, just to get into the final. Joanathan Burns took the 3rd place bronze medal. Congratulations to Mike Harmon as the 2013 Florida Men’s Open Champion.

The Women’s Open division included 7 strong Florida competitors in the draw. The Open final had the 3 seed teenage phenom Jordan Cooperrider of Palm Harbor defeating the 1 seed and 2012 reigning champion Sara Noyes of Saint Petersburg in two straight games (15-10, 15-10).

Sara Noyes is the #126 ranked female player in the country and the #5 ranked woman in Florida. Noyes got the only bye in the quarter-finals, then went on to defeat Susan Adams of Saint Petersburg (15-4 , 15-5) in the semi-finals, just to get that opportunity to attempt to defend her 2012 championship.

Jordan Cooperrider is an outstanding fourteen year old ranked #267 nationally and #17 in Florida, though she already has 6 national and 2 world junior championships on her resume. Jordan had to defeat the 6 seed and #6 ranked woman in Florida, Claudia Andrade of Miami in a tie-breaker (15-14 , 13-15 , 11-8) in the quarter-finals. Next Jordan had to outlast the 2 seed and #2 ranked female player in Florida, racquetball hall of famer Susan Pfahler of Neptune Beach in a tie-breaker (15-12 , 10-15 , 11-5) just to make it to the final. Susan Pfahler received the 3rd place bronze medal.

This year’s women’s results confirms the parity in Florida women’s racquetball. This result is the fifth different women’s champion in the last five years, Jordan Cooperrider in 2013, Sara Noyes in 2012, Janet Tyler in 2011, Helen Marseco in 2010, and Kristen Alatorre-Martin in 2009. Congratulations to Jordan Cooperrider as the 2013 Florida Women’s Open Champion.

The 2012-2013 Florida season Men’s and Women’s Open Singles Championship Cup was announced at this year’s State Singles as well. The winner of the Florida Cup is determined by the player earning the most Open points throughout the season. The 2012-2013 Men’s Open Singles Champion Cup was earned by Mike Harmon. Mike’s name has now been inscribed on the Cup for 5 straight seasons, and has only been won by one other player, Fernando Rios in the 2007-2008 season.

The 2012-2013 Women’s Open Singles Champion Cup was earned by Sara Noyes. This is Sara’s first seasonal Cup win. The 4 prior seasons has Janet Tyler’s name on the Cup. The only other Women’s Cup winners have been Laura Brandt and Susan Pfahler who co-championed the Cup in the 2007-2008 season.

by Gary Wargo
February 10, 2013 - Sarasota, FL

Fourteen year old Jordan Cooperrider wins Florida State Championship. The HEAD-Penn junior began her racquetball career at the age of four. A decade ago Jordan Cooperrider picked up a racquet and was immediately a huge success. At the age of five she won her first tournament and since then has filled a trophy case with junior titles. On February 10, 2013, at the 2013 FRA State Singles Championships she added another title to her collection, Women’s Open State Champion, by beating some of the top adult players in the Sunshine State.

UCF Central Florida Showdown Tournament
February 22 – 24, 2013
Article and photography by Shawn Lopez and Travis Burnell.

The UCF Showdown was held this February at the University of Central Florida, and what a turn out it was! Play was kicked off on Friday with the collegiate divisions comprised of college students from all over Florida. UCF secured 1st place in Men's and Women's #1's and Men's #2's, #6's, and Double's number #3's. Also taking home medals in 3 other divisions allowed UCF to rocket into 1st place for the all around team award and secured it on Saturday. Some amazing racquetball was played on Saturday and Sunday as well.

Its no surprise national mixed doubles champions James Russell and Kelly Van Zant – Russell played great ball to take home the gold in mixed open. While Alejandro Herrera dominated in the Men's open singles. Playing doubles in Men's C's was UCF's own Joey Boyette and father David Boyette who fought through fatigue to take the gold. Travis Burnell squeaked out a tight win over rival Spencer Smudd to take the A division. The match of the tournament though goes to the Open doubles finals match of Herrera/Rebeor vs Russell/Hand. This match went deep into a tiebreaker with no team giving an inch. Herrera/Rebeor were finally able to close it out taking gold in Men's Open Doubles. UCF would like to thank the racquetball community for all their support and kind words. And hopefully everyone is looking to come back next year for the 2nd Annual UCF Showdown!

UCF Knights Racquetball Club Activities
by Gary Wargo
May 1, 2013 - Orlando, FL

The UCF Racquetball club has wrapped up its program for the 2012-2013 school year. It has been an awesome year for the club. All of our major goals were met and we expanded our fundraising by 400% from last year. In addition we were able to use these funds to travel to a bunch of awesome tournaments around the state and of course intercollegiate nationals in Arizona.

As our second year as a club at UCF, we hosted our second annual spring tournament, the 2013 Central Florida Showdown, and raised enough money to take 7 players to nationals. As a result, our club ranked 18th out of Division 1 Colleges and will continue its ascent to the top at next years nationals, wherever that may be.

Thanks to everyone who volunteered to house people, helped with our fundraising events, played in our spring tournament, or helped with our club efforts. A huge thanks goes out to you for supporting our club and making our events possible. Another big thanks to all the retiring officers who put in a substantial amount of their time to do all the planning and work it takes to keep a club running and successful.

Shawn Lopez will be retiring after two years as President. Danielle Harris will be retiring after two years as Treasurer. John Skinner will be retiring after a semester as Vice President. In addition, officer elections have been conducted and we are welcoming our new officers, Armany Gonzalez as President, Aaron Owji as Vice President, and Alex DeCaro as Treasurer. We know they will not only continue to lead the club throughout the next school year but also continue to grow the sport of racquetball at the University of Central Florida.

By Jean Trimble and Renee Fish
April 27, 2013 - Tampa, FL

The Bob Sierra YMCA in Tampa played host to the 2013 Women’s Day Clinic held April 27th. The Florida Racquetball Association along with The Bob Sierra YMCA and Beef O’Brady’s helped sponsor the event in an effort to promote women’s racquetball.

This year’s event proved once again to be very successful. Twenty women from around the state came together for a day of tips, camaraderie among friends, on court playing, and the chance to meet new players and make new friends. The ladies were given playing tips and fitness tips. The six volunteers who donated their time on Saturday for the event were: Janet Tyler, Jean Trimble, Melody Butler, Renee Fish, Susan Pfahler, and Mary Lyons. After morning sessions on basic shots and court drills, participants played each other or the volunteers in the afternoon and also had the opportunity to receive video analysis of their game by Mary Lyons.

The day began at 9:00 AM and lasted until 5:00 PM. After lunch all the ladies participated in a drawing and were rewarded with really nice prizes provided by our wonderful sponsors for this event. Thank you Wilson, Ektelon, and Florida Racquetball Association. Also thanks to Yvonne Buffington and The Bob Sierra YMCA in Tampa who hosted the event and made it possible to run the clinic.

2013 Team Ocala Scholarship Tournament
By Rod Van Dyke
May 24, 2013 - Ocala, FL

For the past 6 years, Team Ocala's racquetball league has hosted a local racquetball tournament with all proceeds going to youth development in Marion County. Generous sponsors have donated time and money to make the event a top notch experience. In total, Team Ocala has donated almost $30,000. That's amazing for a 2 court facility.

The relationship with the YMCA and the racquetball program is successful. The Y now considers racquetball as a permanent program and the staff is engaged in what is happening back at the courts. This keeps the influx of new members coming into the program. Each season and each tournament, there are always new faces falling back in love with a great sport.

Scholarship Tournament Participation and Results:

There were 37 players that competed in singles and doubles at the 6th Annual Youth Scholarship Racquetball Tournament. Guests came from as far away as Sebring and Winter Haven to support the tournament.

A big haul for Jacksonville racquetball
By Hana Ostapchuk, Jacksonville.com - Link to original article
Posted Jun 9, 2013 at 7:45 PM

Being inducted into U.S. Amateur Racquetball Hall of Fame is quite accomplishment, but having two fellow Jacksonville players win national championships during your induction weekend is even better.

That was the case last month when Mitt Layton was honored at the 2013 Ektelon National Singles Racquetball Championships, held May 15-19 at the Meridian Sports Club in Fullerton, Calif.

Layton’s credentials included 19 national event titles between 1995 and 2004. Six of the titles were achieved in the National Singles Championships and 13 from the U.S. Open.

All total, Layton won more than 60 titles, including numerous Florida State and Southeastern Regional crowns. He also received five Player of the Year awards during his playing career.

“My only goal in racquetball was to win my first national championship,” Layton said. “Once I got over the hump of winning my first one, it just exploded.”

Len Knudsen saw Layton’s outstanding performance for more than a decade as an opportunity for public recognition, and decided to nominate Layton for the award.

“We talked about it a couple years ago, but I always wondered why he wasn’t already in the hall of fame,” Knudsen said. “I researched it and found out that somebody has to nominate you, so I did that. After what he’s done in 10 years, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be recognized.”

With Knudsen’s help, Layton did bring home a Hall of Fame plaque.

Aaron Metcalf and Knudsen, meanwhile, brought back national championships to the First Coast.

Metcalf, the No.1 seed in the Men’s 40 Open division, won with an 11-9 tiebreaker in the finals against Keith Minor of Illinois.

But as a No. 5 seed in the Men’s 55 Open division, Knudsen’s success wasn’t as easily predicted. First he defeated Florida rival Leonard Mervin in the semifinals, winning 11-6 in the tiebreaker. The two have played each other in state tournaments for 15 years, with Mervin winning every time.

Knudsen then needed an 11-8 win in the tiebreaker to beat Glenn Ball of Texas for the championship.

“By the time we made it to Len’s championship, we were blue in the face from holding our breath for so long,” Layton said. “But the cool thing was all of us from Jacksonville coming home with a win. The trip couldn’t have been scripted any better.”

Of the five Floridians inducted into the USAR Hall of Fame, three are from Jacksonville. In 2006, Susan Morgan Pfahler and Mary Lyons were inducted as a double team - an honor they still hold.

There could be more inductees from Jacksonville in the future, though.

“One of the things that really sets racquetball apart is that it’s a lifetime sport,” Metcalf said. “With 12 courts built here last year and four more in the process, it shows how much it’s growing, especially in Jacksonville.”

Young Men Learn Life Lessons through Racquetball
By Gary Wargo
December 18, 2013 - Sarasota, FL

Sarasota's ABC affiliate, WWSB-TV Channel 7 captures how racquetball helped Florida's own Robert Koontz and Ricardo Paez.

December, 18, 2013
Re-Print of Article By: Don Brennan, WWSB-TV

SARASOTA, Fla. - One of the reasons sports are popular is the camaraderie they build. Two young men were adopted by the Sarasota YMCA racquetball community, and it was a win-win situation.

When Robert Koontz and Ricardo Paez walk into the YMCA nowadays, they walk in as if they own the Y. It wasn't so long ago that they were on the outside of the Y looking in.

"They came in off the street one day. We taught them how to play. They got good and now they kick everyone's butt," says Bob Kulscar, a racquetball regular at the Y.

Both Robert and Ricardo had strong mothers in their lives, but for young boys, a father figure is key. Neither had one, and that is where the Y community came through.

"A single mom household. I always loved sports, and this family provided me with manhood," says Ricardo. “My mom and dad never finished high school. The guys here are lawyers, doctors, successful people who guided me in life," says Robert.

Kulscar was one of the racquetball gang, and he is tireless in his promotion of racquetball, so he was like a kid in a candy shop with 2 boys. "Racquetball is such a great sport. It's a lifelong sport, and you make lifelong friends out of it. These two will be friends forever."

"It’s a game that develops skills, skills that you need in life as well," says Robert. One serendipitous moment with 2 boys looking through a window into the world of racquetball that has grown into a lifetime of enrichment for everyone involved. “Both are now in college going for their engineering degrees. I can't explain it; to see how they have grown…so proud, so proud," says Kulscar.

"Robert and I have had great life experiences. It has taken me to find myself. I would be nothing without racquetball," says Ricardo.

A lesson in giving that was paid forward, and now will be repaid many times over.

2012 FRA Women's Day Racquetball Clinic
May 13, 2012

The Bob Sierra YMCA in Tampa played host to the 2012 Women’s Day Clinic held April 28th. The Florida Racquetball Association helped to finance the event in an effort to promote women’s racquetball.

This year’s event proved once again to be very successful. Twenty-two women from around the state came together for a day of instruction, camaraderie among friends, on court playing, fitness and work out tips, and the chance to meet new players and make new friends. The ladies were given instruction by eight instructors, Mary Lyons, Karen Bouchard, Sue Adams, Jean Trimble, Janet Tyler, Renee Fish, Sara Noyes, and Melody Butler. After instructions were completed, playing with the instructors was also available to all the ladies.

The day began at 9:00 AM and lasted until 5:00 PM. After lunch all the ladies participated in a drawing and were rewarded with really nice prizes provided by our wonderful sponsors for this event. Thank you Wilson, Ektelon, and Florida Racquetball Association. Also thanks to Yvonne Buffington and the Bob Sierra YMCA who hosted the event and made it possible to run the clinic.

The FRA plans to sponsor the event as well next year. Dates and locations will be posted on the FRA website.

2012 (4th Annual) DPJCC Charity Tournament
By Rick Bernstein and Susan Suid - Co-Tournament Directors
June 26, 2012 - Davie, FL

The 4th Annual David Posnack JCC (DPJCC) Racquetball Tournament sold out again and based on the player feedback and funds raised, was a complete success! Not only was the competition and sportsmanship at its best, we were able to raise about $8,000 for programming and scholarships for camp and school. We’d like to thank all of our players, sponsors and donors, including the FLORIDA RACQUETBALL ASSOCIATION (FRA) for participating in the success of the DPJCC tournament.

A non-sanctioned tournament such as ours is good for promoting the game of racquetball. Over 65% of our players are not members of the USAR or the FRA. Our indoor tournament had a mix of outdoor players, first time tournament players, club players; and some players who have not played in a tournament for many years. We know that many of these players enjoyed the experience so much that they go on to play in other “sanctioned” tournaments, thus fueling the growth of racquetball.

Some player feedback we are pleased to share:
“This was my first tournament and the experience has completely changed my view of the game.…... I made it to the semi-final round and I am determined to win my next tournament. When and where is it?” Jon, 1st Tournament Player

“There are so many good things I can say about my first ever indoor tournament…. This tournament has made me really want to learn the indoor game even more and to play in more tournaments down the road. Just as soon as I can make the ceiling and back wall my friends, or at least better acquaintances. :-) Rick, Susan, Mike, DPJCC and FRA, You all Rock!!!” Bree, Outdoor player

“I will definitely play in other racquetball tournaments. This was a fantastic first tournament to start with. It was so much fun and I got to meet so many great people..... I am already looking forward to the next tournament!” Alyssa, 1st tournament and Ladies A’s winner

Tournament such as ours is a “win-win-win”…. WIN for charity, WIN for the host facility, and a WIN for racquetball. We are committed to Grow The Game!

Graciana Wargo, age 11, was one of four youth athletes in the country chosen by Sports Illustrated Kids as “Future Stars: SportsKids of the Month” for November 2012.

Graciana was in consideration because of her current age-group National Championships in all 3 divisions, Singles, Doubles, and Mixed. Her chances were also heightened since she has been a 2-time World Champion and a 2-time Outdoor National Champion in her age-group as well.

During this process, the publication’s writers and editors evaluate youth athletes that not only have excellent sports accomplishments, but must also establish documented high-level academic achievements and meaningful documented volunteer community service efforts.

When the news of this honor was presented to Graci by her own Girl Scouts troop, Graci said “I am very surprised that they chose me and I am happy my friends and teachers in middle school are seeing racquetball as a cool sport in the magazine”.

For anyone who wants to inspire other kids to give racquetball a try, this feature with photos is in the November 2012 “NBA Preview” issue which has the LA Lakers super team on the cover.

Sports Illustrated Kids can be found at Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, some of the larger Publix Super Markets, airport newsstands, and most public libraries. The magazine currently has a 950,000 hard-copy circulation subscribership and an 8.1 million readership.

Racquetball does make it on occasion into the weekly publication, Sports Illustrated. Just last year, stand-outs such as Kelani Bailey, Taylor Knoth, and Florida’s own Jordan Cooperrider were featured. But a representative of Time, Inc. (the publisher) stated that the last racquetball mention they recall in Sports Illustrated Kids was over 14 years ago. That was a feature of the women’s pro and now hall of famer Michelle (Gilman) Gould back in 1998.

Graci’s parents commented “We are pleased racquetball is receiving some mainstream sports recognition and are humbled that Graciana was acknowledged in the sports magazine”.

Please join us in congratulating Graciana Wargo for her feature in the magazine and for her promotion of the sport of racquetball.
2012 Ormond Beach Senior Games Racquetball at Port Orange YMCA
By Andy Pawlowski
November 5, 2012 - Port Orange, FL

25 players competed in singles and doubles racquetball at this local event.

Fun, friendly and fierce competition rolled into one is the motto on which I have been running this event for the past nine years. This racquetball event is one of the sports offered in the annual Ormond Beach Senior Games which includes some 20 other events.

In prior years Racquetball was a qualifying event for the Florida Sports Foundation State Games, but several years ago it became an open event which meant you did not have to qualify at a local event to enter the state games. However, some municipalities still offer a racquetball event as part of their local senior games. One of those is the Ormond Beach Senior games where the racquetball event on Oct. 26-27, 2012 was hosted at the Port Orange YMCA which has 4 nice courts two of which have full back wall glass on the ground floor.

I have been running this event for 9 years and most of our players come in from outside of the Ormond, Daytona, Port Orange area many of whom have consistently entered for several years. Although I have moved from the Port Orange/Ormond area I will continue to run this event and enjoy seeing old friends providing their interest continues. My thanks and appreciation goes out to the local and out of town players that keep this event viable as part of the overall Ormond Beach Senior Games
Thanks, Andy Pawlowski

2011 State Singles - Men's Open Final - Mike Harmon vs. Vinny Carvallo
What a racquet this guy has going
By Doug Fernandes

SARASOTA

In case you missed it. ...

Next year, they’d be wise to put Mike Harmon’s name on the trophy before the tournament starts.

Wise and pretty much safe.

For the fourth straight year, the 29-year-old Sarasotan won the Open division of the Florida State Singles Racquetball Championships, defeating Vinny Carvello on Sunday at the Sarasota Bath & Racquet Club.

The scores were 15-5, 15-5, and you don’t have to know a drive serve from a drive shaft to know that a 10-point differential in the Open class means Carvello absorbed a fairly significant spanking.

“He’s good at the head game,″ said the 21-year-old Pompano Beach resident, who fell to 0-6 overall against Harmon.

“He never lets you relax to play your game and he gives 110 percent every time. He dove more times than I did.″

Upright, Harmon was the superior player as well, forcing anyone who watched to wonder just how the 150-pounder generates enough force to rocket balls close to 150 mph.

“It’s almost like golf,″ he said. “You don’t have to be the biggest guy to hit the farthest. I think a lot of it is the technique. It’s the whole body that comes through the shot.″

Said Carvello, “He told me once he’s held together by all ligaments -- ‘I don’t need all that muscle.’”

In May, the amateur Harmon heads to Los Angeles for national play. That means a couple of days off from his job in the operating room at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

But before that, an April marriage to Michelle. Sounds as if the LA trip could double as a swell honeymoon.

Staying on racquetball, Jon Wuerffel, father of former Gator QB Danny Wuerffel, returned to win the 65-over division, but the story behind the scar on his right leg was the real topic of conversation.

In June, spearfishing off his home in Destin, Wuerffel was accidentally shot by his diving partner. The barbed spear lodged in his leg, necessitating a surgical removal.

Luckily, it didn’t strike an artery. Neither did a shark swimming near Wuerffel, who bestowed an appropriate last name on Charlie, the friend with the rotten aim.

“I call him Charlie Cheney.″

The Bob Sierra YMCA in Tampa played host to the 2011 Women’s Day Clinic held April 30th. The Florida Racquetball Association helped to finance the event in an effort to promote women’s racquetball.

Twenty-one women from around the state came together for a day of instruction, camaraderie among friends, on court playing, fitness and work out tips, and the chance to meet new players and make new friends. The ladies were given instruction by eight instructors, Susan Pfahler, Karen Bouchard, Sue Adams, Jean Trimble, Janet Tyler, Renee Fish, Kris Alatorre Martin, and Melody Butler. After instructions were completed, playing with the instructors was also available to all the ladies.

2011 Local and State Senior Games Racquetball: Fun, friendly and fierce competition rolled into one.
December 20, 2011 - Lakeland, FL

The Florida Sports Foundation sponsors a number of sports in their state games one of which is Racquetball that took place on Dec.10-11, 2011. Over the past few years the state seniors have evolved into a sanctioned racquetball event of which there were 46 participants entered in singles and doubles. Because the racquetball event is sanctioned a qualified tournament director is important and Jean Trimble and Glenda Lopez stepped up to run the event. The event was hosted at the Lakeland Family YMCA which has 4 nice courts with overhead viewing and large glass windows on the main floor. The age brackets run from 50-80 plus and the players engaged in both friendly and fierce competition. All in all most everyone had a great time and complimented Jean and Glenda for their efforts.

January
Judd and Darcey Martin interview detailing their ongoing commitment to racquetball
By Andy Pawlowski
January 10, 2010

Judd and Darcy Martin’s ongoing commitment to Racquetball
(FRA): When did you first get involved in running programs at the Lakeland and Winter Haven
YMCAs?

Judd -- I first started to assist and run programs in 1990 at the Lakeland YMCA and in 2006 at the
Winter Haven YMCA. Such programs included Mini-Mixer tournaments, leagues, junior programs
(ex. summer camps), Polk Senior Games, and FRA tournaments. Such activities grew a member
base for racquetball players past, present, and future players. Keep in mind, I met my future wife
on the racquetball court!! Since then, we have both been running racquetball programs at both
West Central Florida YMCAs.
On a personal note, I feel privileged and like to thank the West Central Florida YMCA to have the
opportunity to play and to be able to continue to lead these efforts at such a young age not only
for others, but for myself. The Lakeland YMCA has had such great people associated with all
racquetball activities held during the late 80’s and 90’s. The West Central Florida YMCA has
shown that keeping racquetball is an important part of the YMCA vision.

(FRA): Can you summarize how racquetball evolved as you became more involved?

Judd -- The racquetball program at the Lakeland YMCA has always been strong. At the time, I
came on board, Grace Page, YMCA Director was directing all racquetball activities since the
1980s. From there, the programs running a junior racquetball team, high school team, and giving
private lessons to members and non-members increased participation.

(FRA): What was the biggest difference you have seen since the 90’s?

Judd -- A couple of items have changed, the courts have been resurfaced almost every year and
the “Y” designation is now at the service box. Also, as everyone is being “green”, light timers
have now been installed for the courts in Lakeland. The West Central Florida YMCA took over
the Winter Haven courts that were initially Drew’s Athletic Club. These courts are wood panel
with glass back walls. Also, they have been kept in great shape.

(FRA): How many people are playing on the league?

Judd -- Today, there are about 50 players playing in league on Tuesday and Thursday nights at
the Winter Haven YMCA.

(FRA): Please summarize the success of your recent tournament.

Darcey – What we try to do is make a tournament worth the players time and money, for smaller
draws or if we have to combine we do Round Robins and/or drop down draws. We also like to
provide Gatorade, fruit and food throughout the tourney. Another thing that helps make us
successful is that we have a family rate pricing. We like to provide nice shirts and trophies for 1st
and second place that are customized for each event.

(FRA): Overall what factors were key in growing racquetball at this location & what advice do you
have for others that wish to grow the sport?

Judd – Dedicated people, as stated above this is what keeps the sport strong at our club or any
other racquetball court facility.

(FRA): What are the plans for the future?

Judd – “Status quo”, make sure everything keeps moving forward and providing quality events
and programs for new and continuing racquetball players.

(FRA): What can the FRA/USAR do to help improve racquetball at your club?

Judd – A year ago, I wrote to the USAR to see what YMCAs of America and the USAR’s
relationship was and how it was improving through grassroots efforts both on building new courts
and creating programs in existing YMCAs. I was told that there was a relationship there and was
being worked at on a national level. I believe if this relationship was worked on at a larger level
that every YMCA that was built could have courts and be more affordable for not just adults but
juniors to be able to step on a racquetball court and experience the game first hand.

For the Central Florida YMCAs, I believe better education about the USAR’s purpose and the
sport in general besides the basic instruction is crucial to gaining more players to the sport. Still I
think that the basis to grow racquetball from the junior level is at the high school level. More and
more high schools are being built without outdoor racquetball courts which will cut down on
exposure to the sport.

2009-2010 Collegiate Cup Final Standings
By Bob Lerow
February 1, 2010

We have just concluded the inaugural season of the Florida Racquetball Collegiate Challenge Cup Series and it was a great success. We had 7 different schools participating at 4 unique events at 4 different on-campus venues. Each event had between 20 and 40 collegiate participants which indicates that there is definite grass roots interest on college campuses in Florida for playing and competing in racquetball events. Kudos go out to Alain Pujolar at UM, Brad Knudsen at UF, Chris Young at USF, Zach Heng at FSU, and Dan Lerow at FSU for both their participation and ongoing support in making these events successful. Another thank you to Sal Perconti and Wilson Racquetball for supplying balls for the most recent FSU event.

What about the results? Congratulations go out to the University of Florida and Team Captain Brad Knudsen for winning the Florida Collegiate Chalenge Cup for the 2009-2010 season. In a much closer season points battle than expected due to the great turnout by FSU at the recent event there, the final standings are:
UF - 168 points
FSU- 137 points
UM- 64 points
USF- 31 points
Palm Beach Atlantic- 4 points
Polk State - 4 points
North Florida - 2 points

A number of these players are heading out to Missouri in a few weeks to represent their schools at the Intercollegiate Championships. Please wish them great success.

Thanks again to everyone who helped make the 2009-2010 season such a great first season and we are looking forward to making next year even better.
