UCF Knights Racquetball Club Activities
May 1, 2013 - Orlando, FL
The UCF Racquetball club has wrapped up its program for the 2012-2013 school year. It has been an awesome year for the club. All of our major goals were met and we expanded our fundraising by 400% from last year. In addition we were able to use these funds to travel to a bunch of awesome tournaments around the state and of course intercollegiate nationals in Arizona.
As our second year as a club at UCF, we hosted our second annual spring tournament, the 2013 Central Florida Showdown, and raised enough money to take 7 players to nationals. As a result, our club ranked 18th out of Division 1 Colleges and will continue its ascent to the top at next years nationals, wherever that may be.
Thanks to everyone who volunteered to house people, helped with our fundraising events, played in our spring tournament, or helped with our club efforts. A huge thanks goes out to you for supporting our club and making our events possible. Another big thanks to all the retiring officers who put in a substantial amount of their time to do all the planning and work it takes to keep a club running and successful.
Shawn Lopez will be retiring after two years as President. Danielle Harris will be retiring after two years as Treasurer. John Skinner will be retiring after a semester as Vice President. In addition, officer elections have been conducted and we are welcoming our new officers, Armany Gonzalez as President, Aaron Owji as Vice President, and Alex DeCaro as Treasurer. We know they will not only continue to lead the club throughout the next school year but also continue to grow the sport of racquetball at the University of Central Florida.

UCF Central Florida Showdown Tournament
February 22 – 24, 2013
The UCF Showdown was held this February at the University of Central Florida, and what a turn out it was! Play was kicked off on Friday with the collegiate divisions comprised of college students from all over Florida. UCF secured 1st place in Men's and Women's #1's and Men's #2's, #6's, and Double's number #3's. Also taking home medals in 3 other divisions allowed UCF to rocket into 1st place for the all around team award and secured it on Saturday. Some amazing racquetball was played on Saturday and Sunday as well.
Its no surprise national mixed doubles champions James Russell and Kelly Van Zant – Russell played great ball to take home the gold in mixed open. While Alejandro Herrera dominated in the Men's open singles. Playing doubles in Men's C's was UCF's own Joey Boyette and father David Boyette who fought through fatigue to take the gold. Travis Burnell squeaked out a tight win over rival Spencer Smudd to take the A division. The match of the tournament though goes to the Open doubles finals match of Herrera/Rebeor vs Russell/Hand. This match went deep into a tiebreaker with no team giving an inch. Herrera/Rebeor were finally able to close it out taking gold in Men's Open Doubles. UCF would like to thank the racquetball community for all their support and kind words. And hopefully everyone is looking to come back next year for the 2nd Annual UCF Showdown!
