Sports Illustrated Kids Honors Florida Racquetball Athlete

Graciana Wargo

November 1, 2012 - Palm Harbor, FL

Graciana Wargo, age 11, was one of four youth athletes in the country chosen by Sports Illustrated Kids as “Future Stars: SportsKids of the Month” for November 2012.

Graciana was in consideration because of her current age-group National Championships in all 3 divisions, Singles, Doubles, and Mixed. Her chances were also heightened since she has been a 2-time World Champion and a 2-time Outdoor National Champion in her age-group as well.

During this process, the publication’s writers and editors evaluate youth athletes that not only have excellent sports accomplishments, but must also establish documented high-level academic achievements and meaningful documented volunteer community service efforts.

When the news of this honor was presented to Graci by her own Girl Scouts troop, Graci said “I am very surprised that they chose me and I am happy my friends and teachers in middle school are seeing racquetball as a cool sport in the magazine”

For anyone who wants to inspire other kids to give racquetball a try, this feature with photos is in the November 2012 “NBA Preview” issue which has the LA Lakers super team on the cover.

Sports Illustrated Kids can be found at Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, some of the larger Publix Super Markets, airport newsstands, and most public libraries. The magazine currently has a 950,000 hard-copy circulation subscribership and an 8.1 million readership.

Racquetball does make it on occasion into the weekly publication, Sports Illustrated. Just last year, stand-outs such as Kelani Bailey, Taylor Knoth, and Florida’s own Jordan Cooperrider were featured. But a representative of Time, Inc. (the publisher) stated that the last racquetball mention they recall in Sports Illustrated Kids was over 14 years ago. That was a feature of the women’s pro and now hall of famer Michelle (Gilman) Gould back in 1998.

Graci’s parents commented “We are pleased racquetball is receiving some mainstream sports recognition and are humbled that Graciana was acknowledged in the sports magazine”

Please join us in congratulating Graciana Wargo for her feature in the magazine and for her promotion of the sport of racquetball.
