"During a Dec. 11 tournament, Marion County YMCA racquetball players collected more than $1,000 worth of unwrapped toys and donations for local families."
OCALA – A recent racquetball tournament at the Marion County YMCA was more about helping others than winning a match.
Nicole Orr, wellness director for the YMCA of Central Florida, said in an e-mail message that racquetball players throughout the community put a different spin on their sport, bringing a $20, unwrapped toy for their entry fee for the tournament held Dec. 11. For those who played more than one event, a $10, unwrapped toy was the entry fee.
More than $1,000 worth of toys and donations were collected from the 20 players who and are being given to local families and children in need.
Led by tournament directors Cameron McGeoch, Daniel Bray and Rod Van Dyke, the event included representation from the YMCA Racquetball League, Too Your Health Spa and the Inverness area. Matches began at 8 a.m. and lasted until 7 p.m.
The YMCA plans to host the event next year, establishing a tradition of giving back to the community, said Orr.
